We love planting wildflowers! After our recent hay rake of our meadows, we returned on the weekend to plant wildflowers. This will help increase the flower diversity and help get these grassy areas back to a healthy meadow which consists of a range of flowers for all the pollinators. Thank you to the 19 hard working volunteers who gave up their afternoon to improve the health our local green space. Fantastic to have 2 new people join us too.

We planted over 100 plants in one meadow to the west of Hendre Lake, including a favourite of the Shrill Carder Bee, Devils Bit Scabious.
Here's what we planted:
Everlasting Sweet Pea 24
Hedge Woundwort 24
Ragged Robin 6
Vipers Bugloss 12
Birds Foot Trefoil 24
Devil's Bit Scabious 24

With all the dry weather, the ground was very hard so it took a bit more time and muscle to dig for them to be planted. Volunteers also watered the plants during the session. This is one of the cut and lift areas as native wildflowers prefer less nutrient rich soil. Meadows need managing and so with our work alongside the park ranger, and now with planting more wildflowers, we hope in the next few years to see a positive change from this grass area to a vibrant and busy meadow.

We then got back to work for some path maintenance. Part of the volunteer work we do alongside the Park Ranger is to help maintain the paths in our green spaces to keep them accessible for all to use and pass through safely.

We used shears and loppers to cut back bramble, nettle and tree branches, from along one of the lakes entrance gates and nearby pathways.

Some volunteers also scraped back and swept away more debris, bramble and soil, off a path that we've worked on a few times now. It's a massive difference to what it looked like just over a year ago where the bramble and vegetation had encroached and taken over two thirds of the path!
