It was a cold morning but 14 awesome volunteers soon warmed up whilst digging to plant 300 whips, 3 Hazel Trees and a gorgeous Oak Tree. Thanks all for your hard work once again, helping create more habitat and provide resources for our local wildlife to feed, shelter and nest in.

The whips for the hedgerow included 150 Alder Buckthorn, 100 Hawthorn, 25 Rowan and 25 Spindle and is part of Coed Caerdydd program to increase Cardiff's tree canopy.
Hedgerows are fantastic for biodiversity, from moths and bees to birds and hedgehogs. In a few years time, once the hedge has grown, we may see Bats using it as a flight path to catch their prey too.

This area for the hedge was chosen to help protect a site full of grasses and native wildflowers that provide nesting opportunities and food for various wild life. For example, this patch has lots of Teasels which provide pollen and nectar in the Summer for our local pollinators, like Brimstone Butterflies and the rare Shrill Carder Bee, and they also then provide seeds in Winter time for birds like the stunning Goldfinches.
3 Hazel Trees, grown from seed, were kindly donated by a local resident and so we added these to this area too. Another variety of food source for our feathered friends and other foragers

At the Cardiff Great War Memorial, we planted an Oak Tree, to replace the one that was lost a few years ago. We are looking forward to seeing these trees grow and become a great resource for a range of wildlife
